Coho Fly Fishing
Fly Fishing for Big Haida Gwaii Coho
Haida Gwaii's saltwater fishery is undoubtedly world renowned but there is another spectacular angling opportunity here in the islands. Starting around the 1st of September, schools of Coho start to congregate in the estuaries and lower reaches of our local rivers. These are dime bright aggressive fish averaging 11 to 18 pounds and are more than willing to grab a quick swung or stripped fly. Single hand and switch rods are the norm for this program which entails short casts with sink tips or weighted flies. In some cases we will fish a rising tide in or just above the estuary to intercept schools of Coho making their way into fresh water. Sight casting to these energetic fish can be quite a thrill and you can expect hard battles that will have you sprinting down the river banks well into your backing. There are 3 main rivers all within an hour drive from the lodge that have strong runs of big wild Coho and it is possible to fish all three in the same day.
Just spending the day out fishing the rivers in salmon season is an experience in itself. Witness thousands of Pink, Chum and Coho salmon as they move upstream from tidal water into the very stream they were born. Black bears and Bald eagles provide excellent photo opportunities as they forage along the river banks. These are streams that don’t see a lot of fishing pressure and it is common for our guests to have the river all to themselves.
Starting in September 2013 our guests will have the choice of trading a day on the ocean for a day fly fishing or mix it up as you go. If the river conditions aren't ideal, go ocean fishing and if the marine forecast isn't favorable, fish the rivers. Either way you can't lose at this time of the year! Experience the two most exciting angling opportunities Haida Gwaii has to offer in the same fishing trip.
