Action Packed Fishing
From May through September the west coast of Haida Gwaii and Cartwright Sound experience major runs of Chinook (King) salmon. The consistently good Chinook fishing is what this area is best known for. These fish are in the best shape of their lives and can pull hard enough to prove it, putting your angling skills to the test. Chinook average between 20 and 40 pounds in Cartwright Sound and can tip the scales at 50+ pounds. Although we get our share of trophy Chinook it is the volume of fish that is so impressive and makes this area stand out among salmon fishing hot spots. Coho salmon start showing in July with fresh fish moving through Cartwright Sound well into September. Often caught while targeting Chinooks these feisty surface feeders are at times plentiful and fun to catch. Halibut fishing in this area is legendary and can be more closely compared to Alaska. Halibut are abundant in the 20 to 120 pound range and are a short run from the salmon fishing grounds.

BC’s Premier Saltwater Fishing Destination
Experience the same great Chinook fishing as other popular areas on the west coast of Haida Gwaii. The lesser known Cartwright Sound has some of the most productive spots to fish along the entire west coast or anywhere on planet earth for that matter! There are no big lodges or resorts here, only a handful of local guides in an area full of great places to get your Chinook on!
Most of our fishing is done using herring, spoons and plugs on a downrigger or mooching with cut plug herring. We try to match the technique with the conditions at the time. We use downriggers when conditions are tough and give guests the choice of mooching when they are favorable. Average depths for Chinook range from 70 feet to the surface while fishing tight to shore.
Cartwright Sound is a big area full of great bottom structure where Halibut congregate. Fishing is consistent for ideal eating (chicken) size halibut and a good chance of catching a bigger one, much bigger. Its not uncommon to see “Barn Door” halibut well over 200lbs on the west coast of Haida Gwaii. Lingcod and Rockfish are also abundant and caught while targeting halibut.
Saltwater Fly Fishing
Weather its trolling Bucktails for surface feeding coho or Wind Drifting with a sinking line for Coho and Chinook. We have great spots to do both and guides that know their stuff when it comes to fly fishing the west coast. Feeling the power of these fish on a fly rod a lot of fun and we’re all for it! Check with us for details on the ideal fly fishing set up before you come.
